Mariko Suzuki is a professor at Shiga University in Japan. She earned degrees in Natural Science (B.S.) at Nara Women's University, Japan and in Human Sciences (M.S. and Ph.D.) at Osaka University, Japan. She also visited to work at University of California at Berkeley while she was a graduate student (1994-1995). She has researched ways people think and converse about scientific topics in classroom settings. From 1995, when she moved to a tenure-track position at Shiga University, she has collaborated on case studies of teacher education in the US and Japan with E. van Zee at University of Maryland (currently, Oregon State University). From 2001 to 2006, she and T. Nagata at Hyogo University of Teacher Education conducted the “MATE (Multiple Approaches to Teacher Education)” project with J. Nakahara, T. Nishimori & T. Mochizuki at the University of Tokyo and T. Kasai at Okayama University. In this project, she and her colleagues explored ways of fostering prospective teachers’ learning & teaching with technology. During 2003-2004, she collaborated with faculty at the University of Maryland and University of California, Berkeley as a visiting scholar. From 2005, she and her colleagues have organized the “eLESSER (LESson Study practitionER)” project that examines Web based lesson study environments. In 2005, she and T. Nishimori also facilitated science communication among prospective teachers, junior high school students, a school teacher and American prospective teachers & a professor. This trial was completed as a Japanese site of the “MOON (More Observation Of Nature)” project conducted by W. S. Smith. From 2006, she and H. Miyata at Shiga University and T. Nishimori have started to explore ways to blend mobile learning tools with observing the moon to enhance science communication among prospective teachers.
